This site contains announcements, resources, and comments related to the series of “Brown Bag Lunches” being held at Harvard Divinity School during the Spring 2007 term. These lunch discussions have been made possible through the generous support of the John Templeton Foundation.

Each session will take place from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm (or so), in Divinity Hall 211.

See below for general news, then click a highlighted date in the calendar to the left to learn more about the session on that date.

What’s New

February 10 This term, we’ll be focusing on issues related to the nature and functions of “belief” and “proof” in scientific and religious discourse.

We’ll use as our initial resource the book What We Believe But Cannot Prove: Science in the Age of Certainty, edited by John Brockman. This book is based on essays first collected at the site Edge, so if you can’t otherwise get hold of the book, the content should be available there. (See the February 12 page for that session’s essayists’ names.) Occasional additional readings — generally journal articles of one kind or another — will supplement our discussions.

The schedule of sessions and pages to be read from the Brockman book is as follows:

February 121–31
February 2632–63
March 564–97
March 1998–127
April 2128–160
April 16161–191
April 30192–224
